What You’re Missing: Nothing this time.
If you’re reading this now, you’re probably a paid subscriber – which means you probably pay a bit more attention to what kind of shenanigans I’m up to, generally (thank you for subscribing / taking an interest by the way). As someone who keeps an eye on what I’m up to, you might have noticed that I’ve slightly updated the blog – changing the name of it to ‘Woman Face’ and giving it a posh new banner etc. You might be wondering why. Here’s why...
‘Woman Face’ is a project idea I’ve had floating around for a while now – to have a dedicated space for content related to ‘trans issues’. Basically, I sort of ‘made my name’ on the comedy scene and internet by talking about ‘trans issues’. My first hour long, self-produced comedy special ‘Peak Trans’ (watch here for free) was filmed at the Edinburgh Fringe 2022, and was my attempt to make comedy out of some of the most difficult topics on the subject. Spoiler: the show ends with me making out with, and bumping uglies on, a life size effigy of Graham Linehan (I was going through some stuff at the time). It’s not a perfect show, but it’s not bad for a debut and I think there are some decent jokes in there and some healthy experimentation. The entire run sold out, so fuck you h8rs. Did you forget who I am?!
Before that, I got a lot of attention online when I ‘infiltrated’ (bought a ticket to, and attended) the infamous, first LGB Alliance conference (and subsequently got hate-crimed on video) They were heady, whacky days – some of which caused me a lot of despair, sadness and frustration – honestly. Apparently, when you try to engage with the literal worst people on Mother Earth, you end up feeling bad, it turns out. WATCH ME GET HATE-CRIMED HERE!!!
In lots of ways, those experiences turned me off of ‘trans issues’, and I spent the next couple of years trying to re-establish myself as anything but a ‘trans comic’. I wanted to write jokes and screenplays about other things – to explore the other parts of my life, and not be pigeon-holed and tokenised. It turns out, there is more to me than being trans, who’d have thought it? Unfortunately, most agents, producers and mainstream broadcasting companies don’t agree.
My new show ‘I’m Straight Now’ isn’t about trans issues at all, really - and it feels good not having to center them at the heart of everything I do. You can get tickets to some upcoming previews of the show HERE.
But, I am still trans – and I am still affected by ‘trans issues’. Even if I do ultimately want to be known for more than ‘just being trans’, I do continue to have many thoughts on what it means to be a trans woman in the UK today, and I still find myself compelled to write about it. And I want ‘Woman Face’ to be a special place where I can do that, in a (hopefully) funny and entertaining way. I want to write articles here about my personal experiences navigating the comedy scene, the country, the world – and, if Thatcher allows it, outer space. We’ll get there one day, girls.
It won’t always be strictly ‘trans content’ here. There is, after all, a lot more to me than there is to me. And if you dare to subscribe to the ‘Woman Face Secret Diary’ you might even get some real unfocused & meaningless drivel. But, I have realised recently that I do need a dedicated space for these thoughts on trans issues to live, and that place is going to be Woman Face – because having my comedy (and by extension my personality) centered on it is doing nothing for my brain-health.
If you’re one of the people who have stuck with me over the years, and had patience with me while I’ve tried to figure out my place in it all – thank you. And if you are a new follower to the blog who has literally no idea what the hell I’m even going on about – good luck, and welcome to Hell!
