Yesterday evening I was back in Brighton for a gig at the Komedia (Bent Double). It was a lot of fun, and the audience is always pretty brilliant in the Komedia main room.
In the Komedia green room, they now have a bunch of posters up on the walls, celebrating the early years of some of the countries biggest acts - who also happened to play there. Graham Norton, The League of Gentlemen and Sean Lock are a few examples. I am a naturally clumsy person, and I nearly knocked them off the wall 4 times. Still, it’s a beautiful metaphor - make way for new blood, why dontcha?
I used to live in Brighton, for a good 8 or so years. It’s where I started stand up comedy, and I have extremely fond memories of the place. That being said, I also have painful memories associated with it - so coming back is always a mixed bag of feelings. At one point in my life, I thought I was going to be living there forever. Myself and my ex-partner were undergoing the adoption process, but it unfortunately never worked out. A lot of people don’t know that at one point I was preparing to be a parent, albeit in a slightly more unconventional way. Looking back, I almost cannot believe that I was doing that. It felt so right at the time, but if I’m completely honest with myself - I don’t feel ready for that level of responsibility now, let alone when I was that age.
